Daniel Old Greek Version My TranslationThis is a featured page

This project is a work in progress. It is the Old Greek Version of the book of Daniel. It is a different Greek version that many people are not familar with. Most people are familar with Theodotion's Greek version, often refered to as the Septuagint version. But actually Theodotion's version is not the Septuagint version, this version here (Old Greek) is the actual Septuagint version. Very early on Theodotion's version was adopted by many in the early Church, for what reason no one knows for sure, but it eventually was placed among the rest of the Biblical books in place of the original Septuagint version of Daniel. This version is very different from the Hebrew version that is used today. The reason it is different is because the Septuagint translators translated from a Hebrew and Aramaic text that was different, meaning they had a parent text that could have very well have been closer to what Daniel actually wrote, or Daniel could have written more than one version of his account. Reguardless of what theory is true, this ancient version is very worthy of attention.

1:1 During the third year of Joakim, king of Judea, Nabuchodonesor, king of Babylon, arrived at Jerusalem and he attacked it.
1:2 And the Lord handed it over into his hands, even Joakim, the king of Judea, and a portion of the sacred vessels of the Lord, and he carried it away into the Babylonian region, and he secured it into his idol temple.
1:3 And the king said to his own chief eunuch, Aspanes, to bring the sons of great men out of Israel, and from the kingly race, and from the chosen ones:
1:4 young men, blameless and attractive, and having knowledge in all wisdom, and experts in grammar, and discerning and wise and strong, to be in the house of the king, and to teach them the letters and the Chaldean dialect,
1:5 and for them to be given exposure alongside of the king each and every day from the royal table, and from the wine that the king himself drinks, and to educate them three years, and to set some among them before the king.
1:6 And there were those from Judea who were from the race of the sons of Israel: Daniel, Ananias, Meisael, and Azarias.
1:7 And the chief eunuch gave them names: to Daniel, Baltasar, but to Ananias, Sedrach, and to Meisael, Meisach, and to Azarias, Abednago.
1:8 And Daniel reasoned in his heart to not be polluted by the supper of the king and by the wine that he drinks, and he pled to the chief eunuch so that he would not be stained.

1:9 And the Lord gave to Daniel honor and respect before the chief eunuch.
1:10 And the chief eunuch said to Daniel, “I am anxious over my master the king, who organized your food and your drink, because if your face is downcast and weaker than the young men and foreigners that are with you, I will be in danger of my own neck!”
1:11 And Daniel said to Solomaro, the chief eunuch that was appointed over Daniel, Ananias, Meisael, and Azarias,
1:12 “Test now your male servants for ten days, and give to us to eat from the grain-fields, and water to drink.
1:13 And if it be shown that our appearance is distinguishable in comparison with the other young men eating from the king’s supper, then deal with your servants as you wish.”
1:14 And he treated them in this manner. And he tested them for ten days.
1:15 And after the ten days their faces appeared good and the condition of their body was better than the other young men who were eating of the royal dinner.
1:16 And he did approve to take their dinner and wine and he gave to them from the germ able wheat.
1:17 And the Lord gave to the young men higher knowledge and understanding, intelligence in all academics; and to Daniel, understanding in every word and dreams and in all wisdom.

1:18 And after these days the king commanded them to bring them in, and the chief eunuch led them to king Nabuchodonesor.
1:19 And the king talked with them and there was not found any among the wise like Daniel and Ananias and Meisael and Azarias, and they were in the presence of the king.
1:20 And in every statement and understanding and training which he sought from them, the king found them to be ten times wiser and superior than the wise men and the literary men in the entire kingdom. And the king glorified them, and he appointed them above all his wise men in the matters in all his own land and kingdom.
1:21 And Daniel was there until the first year of the kingdom of Cyrus.
2:1 And in the twelfth year of the kingdom of Nabuchodonesor, it came about that visions and dreams fell upon him, and he was startled in his dream. And his sleep went from him.
2:2 And the king ordered that the enchanters and the magicians and the sorcerers of the Chaldeans to be called in to tell the king his dreams. And they came and stood in the presence of the king.
2:3 And the king said to them, “I have seen a dream and my spirit was moved. Recognize the dream.”
2:4 And the Chaldeans spoke to the king in Syriac, “O lord, O king, live forever! Tell your dream to your servants and we will make it known.

2:5 But the king answered and said to the Chaldeans, “So, unless you report to me the dream in truth and reveal its interpretation to me, you will be exposed to public shame and your possessions will be taken up into the royal coffers.
2:6 But if you make clear to me the dream and tell it’s meaning, you will receive all kinds of gifts, and you will be glorified by me. Therefore, you reveal the dream to me and judge it.
2:7 But they answered a second time saying, “O king, say the vision, and also your children will judge in regard to these things.”
2:8 And the king said to them, “ I truly know that you are trying to buy time. Therefore, just as I have commanded.
2:9 Unless you give the dream and reveal it’s meaning, you will fall in with death. For you agreed to make lying words in my presence until the time be changed. Now, therefore, if you tell me the vision that I saw at night, I will know that you should reveal its meaning.”
2:10 And the Chaldeans answered in the presence of the king, “No one upon the earth will be able to say to the king what he has seen just as you ask. And every king and every ruler does not ask such a task of any wise man and magician and Chaldean.
2:11 And the word which you are seeking O king is deep and causing anticipation. And there is no one who is able to make these things clear unless an angel, which who’s dwelling is not with any flesh. Therefore, it is not possible to happen as you imagine.”

2:12 Then the king, being sympathetic and deeply grieved, commanded to bring out all the crafty men of Babylonia.
2:13 And they were decreed to kill them all, Daniel and all those with him were sought for the sake of being destroyed together.
2:14 Then Daniel spoke the counsel and idea that he had to Arioch, the chief guard of the king, who assigned to bring out the wise men of Babylonia.
2:15 And he inquired of him, saying, “For what reason is it being decreed so bitterly by the king?” Then Arioch made the command known to Daniel.
2:16 Now Daniel entered quickly to the king, and he petitioned that time be given to him, and he would reveal everything in the presence of the king.
2:17 Then Daniel departed to his own home to warn his companions Ananias, Misael, and Azarias of everything.
2:18 And he gave orders to fast and plead and to seek help from the Lord of the Most High concerning this mystery, so that Daniel and those with him might not be given up to destruction together with the wise men of Babylon.
2:19 Then, the mystery of the king was revealed to Daniel at night in a vision; the matter was made known clearly.

2:20 And crying out, he said, “Let the name of the great Lord be blessed forever and ever, because the wisdom and majesty are His.
2:21 And He changes seasons and times, changing and placing kings, and giving wisdom to the wise, and understanding to those who are in higher knowledge,
2:22 and uncovering the deep and dark things, and knowing the things in the darkness and in the light, and with Him is closure.
2:23 You, O Lord God of my fathers, I fully confess and praise, because you gave to me wisdom and understanding, and now you make known all that I have petitioned in order to reveal to the king in regard to these things.”
2:24 And Daniel entered in to Arioch, who was chosen by the king to kill the wise men of Babylon, and he said to him, “You should not destroy all the wise men of Babylon, but take me into king and I will show him everything.
2:25 Then Arioch, out of haste, brought in Daniel to the king and thus said, “I have found a wise man among the captivity of the sons of Judea who will make everything clear to the king.”
2:26 The king, having answered Daniel (who is called Baltasar in Chaldean), “Can you reveal to me the vision that I saw and the meaning of these things?”

129

2:27 So, Daniel, crying out before the king said, “The mystery that which has been seen by the king is not a manifestation of wise men and enchanters and sorcerers and astrologers.
2:28 But there is a Lord in Heaven bringing mysteries to light and made clear to king Nabuchodonesor what must happen during the last days. O king live-forever! The dream and the vision of your head upon your bed is this:
2:29 You saw all that must take place during the last days. And the One that uncovers mysteries has made clear to me what is about to happen.
2:30 But to me also, this mystery was not brought to light according to wisdom existing in me beyond all men, but to reveal it for the sake of the king. It was made known to me what you took up in your heart by knowledge.
2:31 And you have seen, O king, and behold, one image. And that image was exceedingly great, and its appearance was awesome, it stood before you. And the appearance of the image was fearful.
2:32 And the head was of valuable gold, and the chest and the arms silver, and the belly and thighs copper,
2:33 but the legs of iron, and the feet partly iron and partly of clay.
2:34 And you saw while the stone was cut from a mountain without hands, and it struck the image upon the feet of iron and clay, and it ground them up.

2:35 Then the iron and the fragment of pottery and the copper and the silver and the gold became fined together, and became fined out like chaff in the threshing floor, and the wind blew it so that nothing was to be left in them, and the stone struck the image and turned into a great mountain, and it struck the entire earth.
2:36 This is the vision we will utter in the presence of the king.
2:37 You O king of kings, and to you the Lord of Heaven gave the kingdom and strength and honor and glory.
2:38 In the entire world from men and wild beasts of the field and birds of heaven and the fish of the sea, He delivered them into your hands to control everything. You are the head of gold.
2:39 And after you will rise a kingdom smaller than yours, and a third kingdom, another one of brass, will control the entire earth.
2:40 And another kingdom will be strong as iron, which saws up everything and cuts down every tree, and the entire earth will be shaken.
2:41 And as you saw its feet partly of iron and partly of clay pottery, there will be another kingdom in two parts, and from the iron a root will be in it, just as you saw the iron being mixed together with the clay earthen vessel.
2:42 And the toes of the feet partly of iron and partly of clay;

part of the kingdom will be strong, and a portion of it will be will be crushed.
2:43 And as you saw the iron being mixed with the clay earthen vessel, they will be intermingled into races of men, they will not be united nor friendly to each other, as neither is iron able to be blended to an earthen vessel.
2:44 And in the times of these kings, the God of Heaven will set up another kingdom that will be forever, and it shall not be corrupted. And this kingdom will never allow another nation, but it will strike and remove these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever,
2:45 just as you have seen from the mountain that was being cut from stone without hands, and it ground the earthen vessel, the iron and copper and silver and gold. The great God signified to the king what will be during the last of the days, and the vision is accurate and the discernment is faithful.”
2:46 Then the king Nabuchodonesor fell upon his face, prostrating before Daniel, and he commanded offerings and drink offerings to be made to him.
2:47 And the king cried out to Daniel, and he said, “It is true, the God of gods and Lord of lords and Lord of kings, who alone brings to light hidden mysteries, because you have been able to reveal this mystery.
2:48 Then king Nabuchodonesor

declared Daniel great, and gave to him great gifts and appointed him over many things of Babylonia, and he established him a ruler, and to have authority over all the wise men of Babylon.
2:49 And Daniel petitioned the king so that Sedrach, Meisach, and Abednago might be placed over the things of Babylonia. And Daniel was in the royal courtyard.

3:1 In the eighteenth year of Nabuchodonesor, while governing the city and the regions, and all those living upon the earth, from India all the way to Ethiopia, he made a golden image. Its height was *sixty cubits and its width was six cubits. And he set it in the plain of the area of the region of Babylonia.
3:2 And Nabuchodonesor, king of kings, and ruling the whole inhabited world, sent out to gather all the nations and tribes and tongues, rulers and headmen, administrators, governors of Persia and captains, and those over authorities throughout the region, and those throughout the inhabited earth, came to the dedication of the golden image that king Nabuchodonesor set.
3:3 Then, they were assembled, those just mentioned, and they stood before the image.

3:4 And the bearer of news made a proclamation, “I am declaring to you O nations and peoples and tongues,
3:5 when you hear the sound of the trumpet, shepherds pipe, harp, lyre, stringed instrument, music, and every kind of musician, you will fall down to worship the golden image that king Nabuchodonesor set.
3:6 And anyone who does not fall down to worship it, they shall throw him into the furnace of fire.”
3:7 And during that time when all the nations heard the trumpet and all of the musicians, all the nations, tribes and tongues did worship the golden image that Nabuchodonesor set.
3:8 During that time the Chaldean men came forward, they slandered the Jews.
3:9 And they answered and said, “O lord O king, live forever!
3:10 You, O king, assigned, and you judged that all man, whoever hears the trumpet call, and all the sounds of the musicians, did fall down to worship the golden image.
3:11 And whoever does not fall down to worship it, they shall be put him into the burning furnace of fire.”

3:12 But there are some Judean men whom you set over the region of Babylonia, Sedrach, Meisach, and Abedenago; those men were not afraid of your command and your idol, and they did not worship your image of gold that you set.
3:13 Then Nabuchodonesor, being enraged in anger commanded to bring forth Sedrach, Meisach, and Abedenago. Then the men were led in to the king.
3:14 So when the king Nabuchodonesor realized, he said to them, “O Sedrach, Meisach, and Adebdenago, do you not serve my gods in truth nor worship the golden image that I have set?
3:15 And now, if you have prepared together to hear the trumpet and all the musicians, then fall down and worship the image that I stood up. Otherwise, you know that if you do not worship it, you will be put into the burning furnace of fire right on the spot. And what god shall set you free from my hands?
3:16 And having answered, Sedrach, Meisach, and Abedenago said to king Nabuchdonesor, “O king, we have no need to answer you in this command.

God in Heaven, our one Lord, whom we fear, who is able to deliver us from the burning furnace of fire, and He will deliver us from you hand O king.
