The Lake of Fire is the place of eternal punishment that comes at the final judgment. When Christ judges the living and the dead, those who do not go to Heaven will be cast body and soul into the Lake of Fire, also called Gehenna or even Hell.




The Lake of Fire is not Hades:
Hades is sometimes referred to as Hell. It is the place where the souls of the unsaved go immediately after death. Hades is not Purgatory either, Purgatory is only for the saved who are on their way to Heaven, but Hades is a temporary place of punishment for the unsaved. The souls in Hades will one day be reunited with their old bodies at Judgment Day and then cast into the Lake of Fire for eternity. Hades is a Greek word, and sometimes translators will translate it as Hell, but in my personal opinion it is better for it to be transliterated as Hades to avoid confusion that arises from getting it confused with the eternal punishment.
