This is that infamous number that is found in the book of Revelation (13:16-18; 16:2; 19:20). Scripture says:



16 Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, 17 so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name. 18 This calls for wisdom: let him who has understanding reckon the number of the beast, for it is a human number, its number is six hundred and sixty-six.



The obvious question would be, 'what does this number mean?' Scripture says it is, the name of the beast or the number of its name and that it is a human number.

But before I go any further, I do want to stress that I remain cautious by not showing any certainty of who the Antichrist is or will be in a specific manner. I choose to follow the same spirit of St. Irenaeus who said,

" It is therefore more certain, and less hazardous, to await the fulfilment of the prophecy, than to be making surmises, and casting about for any names that may present themselves, inasmuch as many names can be found possessing the number mentioned; and the same question will, after all, remain unsolved. For if there are many names found possessing this number, it will be asked which among them shall the coming man bear. It is not through a want of names containing the number of that name that I say this, but on account of the fear of God, and zeal for the truth: We will not, however, incur the risk of pronouncing positively as to the name of Antichrist; for if it were necessary that his name should be distinctly revealed in this present time, it would have been announced by him who beheld the apocalyptic vision." (Against Hereises 5.30.3


That being said, let's look at some possible names!

There are many names that we can come up with that are equivalent to this number. The consensus among the Early Church Fathers is TEITON in Greek and DICLUX in Latin.

In Greek: Teitan, which τ three hundred, ε five, ι ten, τ three hundred, α one, ν fifty,— which taken together become six hundred and sixty-six.

In Latin: DICLUX, which letters are reckoned in this manner: since D figures five hundred, I one, C a hundred, L fifty, V five, X ten,— which by the reckoning up of the letters makes similarly six hundred and sixty-six.

In Hebrew: Nero Caesar" (or "Caesar Nero") was NRWN QSR.

What does it mean by, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead?

It is highly unlikely that it will be a literal mark on their forehead and right hand. I follow the idea of Primasius, he said,

"He here distinguishes the individual members, although more often he includes them as a whole in the body, or the person of the beast. The 'hand' indicates works, and it is the right hand to simulate truth. The 'forehead' symbolizes the confession of faith. Since they are defrauded in regard to both of these good things, they are said to be marked on both."
